More so than in most disasters, churches are expected to take a leading role in mounting a massive relief effort in Haiti, one of the poorest nations on the globe with a per capita income of less than $800 a year.
"I think churches will play a dominant role," because many do mission work in the country and because the need is so great, said Leara Rhodes, a University of Georgia journalism professor and one of many Athenians with personal connections to the Caribbean country of about 10 million people.

Hope for Haiti plans to use donations from the concert to buy critical supplies, Land said.
Among other organizations, the Athens-based Anglican Catholic Church also has begun a relief fund and announced that the church's orphanage in Port-au-Prince had been destroyed.
The Rev. Howard Conine of Athens' New Covenant Worship Center, who lived in Haiti for three years, is one of many area pastors who put out a call for help from church members.
New Covenant already plans to send a medical team to Haiti when
